Two sisters murder 50-year-old brother over land proceeds
Two sisters in Akpabuyo Local Government Area of Cross River State are now guests of Afokang Prisons over an alleged murder of their 50-yearold brother, Mr. Kokoette Effiom Effiong, in the course of demanding for their share of money from the sale of their late father’s land.
Late Kokoette was
hacked down at about 7.00pm at the weekend by his sisters, Ikwo Effiom Effiong, 30, and Edak Effiom Effiong, 28, using clubs and machetes. Police sources said the deceased was found dead with broken skull, broken limps and machetes cuts on his body.
The suspects were arrested by the police in Ikot Nakada in Akpabuyo and promptly transferred to the state Criminal Investigation Department, CID, Diamond Hill in Calabar.
They were later yesterday charged to court for conspiracy to murder and murder in line with Section 516 and 519 of the criminal code from where they were remanded in prison custody. When National Mirror visited the village at Ekpenetete in Akpabuyo, some villagers alleged that the two suspects were a ‘terror’ to their neighbours and respective husbands, being divorcees.
Some also alleged they were used to using broken bottles, knifes and sticks on unsuspecting victims during any brawl. Narrating what led to the muder, one of the suspects, Edak, alleged that on the fateful day “we were told that Kokoette gave the names of three of us, including one of our siblings, Efangha to a native doctor for money rituals.”
She said, they were convinced that Kokoette had already concluded arrangement with the said ritualist to sacrifice their lives, as he allegedly threatened them on one occasion that “in six months time, all our nonsense will stop because we will be kneeling down to beg him for money. “Our brother promised to use us for money rituals because he was planning to buy a jeep.”
On what lead to the gory incident, she alleged that the deceased “came to our kitchen to cook cocoyam, so we warned him not to use our kitchen again because we don’t like sharing a kitchen with any man, besides that he sold our father’s land and had the guts to keep the money to himself without giving us our own share.”
State Command Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, John Imoh, also confirmed that they were charged to court after the police had concluded investigations on the matter, citing the need for the law to take its course
